‘Digital Surveillance’ Vs ‘Right to Privacy’ in Ethiopia

Ethiopia’s constitution is one of the world’s generous constitutions in giving rights. It gives ‘the nations, nationalities and peoples the right to self determination to secession.’ So, it is no wonder that it gives the ultimate right for freedom of expression and the right to privacy. However, the question is that ‘are the rights granted on the constitution applicable in reality?’

It is universally true that rights are always granted with restrictions. These restrictions are applied usually for ‘national security issues’ or even to protect the well being of certain society members and also in cases where the right conflicts with other rights. For example, the right for freedom of expression should not exceed the right to privacy and leave individuals in physical and psychological insecurity. In consideration of this, I have been challenging myself to answer the question ‘is Ethiopia over writing constitutional rights for one of these reasons or just to protect the power of its rulers?’

Article 29 of the constitution in its sub article 2, gives the right to ‘everyone’ to express him/herself without interference. “This right shall include freedom to seek, receive and impart information and ideas of all kinds, regardless of frontiers, either orally, in writing or in print, in the form of art, or through any media of his choice.” On sub article 3/a, it approves the prohibition of any form of censorship; on sub article 3/b, that citizens have the freedom to access information of public interest.

There is also article 26 of the constitution which gives the people the right to privacy. Section 2 of this article reads:
“Everyone has the right to the inviolability of his notes and correspondence including postal letters, and communications made by means of telephone, telecommunications and electronic devices.”

I will forward three major problems to make my point.

Ethiopia: Is OLF Dead or Alive?

Based on a facebook status update I wrote on October 1, 2013 on which I mentioned OLF (Oromo Liberation Front was dead) I had an interesting discussion on twitter. I thought, though boring, it would also be helpful in provoking discussion on the Oromo-Ethiopia politics and future, if you get a few lines of the discussion. Enjoy! Below is the status update I published:
They give a term their own meaning; then, they condemn it.

For me, Ethiopianism is one of these purposely made confusing terms. It is used by OLF'ites to refer to Abyssinianism (which is dominated by Amhara, Tigre and a few southerners esp. the Guraghe people culture). Ethiopia is a country that's wider than that Abyssinia now. Yes, Abbyssinians have used force, abused rights, marginalized some cultures and languages but that don't make wrong the fact that they created a bigger sovereign State. Bigger is better in either political power or economical strength. That State - Ethiopia - is home of all regardless of differences in language, cultural values and religious beliefs. The only thing that makes it look like a comfortable home for few is its political setting. Its political setting has always been different to its societal setting.

Political leaders of Ethiopia, unfortunately, couldn't successfully create regimes that favor every member of the society equally and impartially.

Ethiopia is a sovereign State. Any Ethiopian has the right and the obligation to struggle to make Ethiopia an inclusive one for all because it is meant to be like that. Therefore, Ethiopianism can be defined and redefined as a State that accommodates all varieties of social values, language and cultural differences. Be it in Federalism or whatever you have, Ethiopiaism can be defined as an accommodating one to be in the future; but not as the discriminatory one as in the past.

I am not in delusion about the presence of politicians or activists who work to profit from defaming or faking common values. For me, they will eventually perish.

I have a good example how political entrepreneurship perishes the good cause. OLF, especially for introducing Oromummaa, was a great party. Oromumma is a movement to create pride in and promote the Oromo language, the Oromo Culture and the Oromo indigenous Religion. The Oromo people loved it and accepted OLF as redeemer of the people. But, OLF couldn't be in the place when needed. Dirty political games and interests have washed their cause away from the OLFites mind. And, only if they think that will make them look like more Oromo than the other (there is no such thing though) they do anything. That's how they created lines between societies who are living together to profit from the split. Now, the only benefit OLF do is used to TPLF as a means to jail Oromo youth dissidents.

By the way, it has been so long since OLF has died; but, its ghost - like Meles' ghost - is leading many. I suggest it is time to wake up and listen to the pain of the people you are claiming struggling for. Stand by it and help solving its challenges. Don't confuse it.

Ethiopia’s UDJ Public Demonstration Got Its Route Blocked By Police; Protest Held Anyway!

ON SEPTEMBER 29, 2013 major opposition party of Ethiopia, UDJ (Unity for Democracy and Justice), in collaboration with the coalition of 33 political parties held a brief public demonstration in protest against the controversial Anti-Terrorism Proclamation No. 652/2009 and other human and democratic rights violations. The demonstration was called as a closure to the party’s three months long campaign titled “Millions of Voices for Freedom”.

The demonstration got its route blocked by police in the very beginning however thousands of demonstrators could chant their oppositions in the spot where it was started. Many applauded these demonstrators for they took risk to face the infamous brutality of police in Ethiopia and kept themselves peaceful until the dispersion of the gathering.

Police blocked the demonstration route to Mesqel square reasoning out that Mesqel square is under construction of the city railroad. This, however, didn’t satisfy the organizers of the demonstration because the square hosted a demonstration called by Union of Religious Institution and Ministry of Federal Affairs a month ago as well as another religious event called Mesqel where hundreds of thousands people attended just three days before this demonstration was called.

The government officials instead suggested the demonstration to be held in a compound known as ‘Janmeda’ which is a few kilometers away from the head office of UDJ. The organizers refused to accept that proposal mentioning the fact that the compound is 100 meters away from a military camp and that according to Demonstration Proclamation No. 003/1991 Article 7/2 – which enforces demonstrations to be held at least 500 meters away from any military camp.

፤ (5) ቡልቻ ዸመቅሳ—  My Life and My Vision ይገኙበታል።
